Online Dating in my eyes...

Online dating is a $4 billion industry worldwide. I said $4 BILLION! What is this obsession about? While I am not personally interested in online dating, it fascinates me to read and learn about this online lifestyle that many perfectly normal people participate in. I haven’t yet decided if I'm a supporter or hater of online dating, but I do hope to find out. I hope some of the links I post and questions I ask interest you too and have you wondering more about a 4 BILLION DOLLAR industry in our world right now.
Obviously 4 Billion dollars is a lot of money! 4 billion dollars could be used for something else and people could rely on fate for meeting their life partner. But is that even possible for some people anymore (to just rely on fate in meeting the man or woman of their dreams)? Were able to learn so much about a person now through technology, that we don’t even have to meet someone in person first before we decide if we like them or not. I'm sure none of our grandparents met on match.com and they couldn’t have even imagined it back then.
Since the internet can provide so much information about a person, I can't help but wonder...What will our grandchildren and future generations be doing to meet the love of their life?

Check out these statistics of online dating...

  1. The average price to join an onlnine dating site is $15...why not gain some confidence and use that money to take out the cute girl at the coffee shop?

  2. 4 BILLION DOLLARS!I didn't realize that. Who knew that there were that many lonely, anti social people in the world. I'm not against online dating (to each his/her own),but I do find it weird if people would rather meet through the internet vs. taking a chance and going out of there houses and meeting people the old fashion way. Hmmm. Maybe I find it lazy or too easy or for the scared and out on their luck types. I could be wrong though.

  3. I think this reflects the impression management culture we have in America. We would rather meet online to save face, not so much because of laziness. It is much easier to be rejected in private than in public.
On the other hand, I also think that these websites help people cut a few corners when looking for someone to date. On these dating websites, you are already provided with people that are compatible in a deeper level before you even meet them. In live dating, people would usually not find out about those things a few dates into it. I guess this also reflects the practical side of our cultue that Atiya suggested as a possible outcome of laziness.
This online dating fever helps connect people that would not usually be connected and already places them in a position in which they are more likely to get along, while facilitating the approach to one another. Maybe that is the reason for its uprising billionaire industry.
